Getting Around

So it occurred to me yesterday that I should probably figure out exactly husband and I should get from the church to the reception location (first time I've typed husband - really weird).  Since I am a transportation nerd, this is actually a really big deal.  Obviously, we could take Clark, fiancées trusty Ford Explorer, but the missing trim and general shabbiness make it not my idea of a wedding chariot.  

My first idea was a trolley, since they are awesome.  They are pretty popular right now, but unfortunately, they are also very expensive, so that was out.  I looked around for classic cars to rent in Northern Michigan and didn't really find anything, so that was out too.  I then just happened to think about the fact that I will be buying a scooter at some point after the wedding, since I will be moving to Virginia, and they don't really believe it's possible to live without owning a vehicle there.  Seriously, how awesome would it be to leave the church on a bright red Vespa?

My mom thinks I'm crazy, and perhaps I am a little, but I think it's a great idea.  What do you think?

So I was really excited when I came across this dress via Humble Ablog, but unfortunately it's no longer available. :( Hmm...having interesting thoughts now about converting my shower curtain into a dress....

Morgan Freeman at the Wheel

So, it's fairly unusual to actually understand what the metro driver is saying in any of his announcements, but occasionally you can make out what the next station is, etc. But it's always a good day when you have an operator who likes his job and makes the riders feel like he or she cares about them. But it's a super good day when Morgan Freeman is driving your train. I've had this guy as a conductor a couple of times, and it definitely threw me for a loop. I'm just going to pretend he wasn't someone who sounded exactly like him, but was really Morgan Freeman doing some research for an upcoming role. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I Guess I Work in the Right Town...

According to the Texas Transportation Institute via the Washington Post, DC is the only major metropolitan area to have traffic congestion increase this year, with all but two decreasing. Awesome. Hey, it's job security, if nothing else.

Metro Art: Wheaton Edition

Most of the Metro stations have some kind of artwork, mural, etc, and someday my plan is to ride the entire system and take photos of it all. These tiles are from the Wheaton station, and were gorgeous in the sun, but it was hard to capture fully. The starbursts were mirrored and really glittered.

I'm a Transportation Geek, I know...

But I do have an excuse. It is what I do for a living, after all. But anyways, I stumbled across an old Op Ed piece from the New York Times that just made my day today, which was all about the author's two sons' love affair with the subway. They are 3 and 5 and know way more than anyone I've ever talked to about the New York subway system. I'm usually lucky enough to have a native New Yorker as a guide when I go on the subway, otherwise I don't think I would ever come out.



The original thing that sent me to the NYT was, surprise, surprise, an Apartment Therapy post, about an amazing bathroom tile job which was pretty much the entire subway map. Somehow I don't think my landlord would be thrilled if I put the metro map in my bathroom, but it's tempting...

Road Man No. 2

So I didn't realize quite how badly I had abandoned my blog, but it has been over a week, so I think that means today needs at least two posts. I just bought a new computer a couple of days ago (finally replacing my laptop which was stolen in March), and so I'm in the process of transferring everything over there at the moment. Once that's all up and running though, I should post more often.

Road Man

This awesome little man is on 17th St, a half block from the White House. I'm not sure why he's there, or who put him there, but he makes me smile at least weekly.
